Music Reviews

“An unashamed Hendrix and Joplin inspired rock chick mixing, rock, pop, blues and soul. New Single ‘Out of Control’ and trips to LA, where interest in Anita’s potential is growing. At home Music Week are tipping a ballsier female talent.”

“Playtime is awesome”

” The battle for the catchiest song of the year so far is between Rihanna’s’ Rude Boy’ and this. Clothed as thrashed-up emo-pop, this tune is as muscular as a weightlifter underneath. From the first strike of the guitar chord intro, the drive to the soaring chorus gathers pace as it hurtles tunefully towards its denouement. A northern lass born to Indian parents and currently located somewhere in south London, Anita Maj has been building a steady following both inside and outside of shady, black-clad, baggy-eyed industry circles. The easily-missed lyrics can make you cry and are shoe-horned, Manic Street Preachers-like into the melody: “Can’t hide my feelings/When you’re talking to her/I die inside…”. Forget the vampire imagery, but beware – like the friendly girl/boy next-door you will slowly and imperceptibly fall in love with this priceless gem of a record. For more info goto www.anitamaj.com

“Anita Maj puts a modern spin on classic rock, with enough variety to slow it down for Bluesy numbers like Woman, or really cut loose like with Nobody’s Fool, not forgetting poptastic Killer-inspired tracks like Undercover, or the balled-esque Don’t Forget Me. Truly, you won’t forget a performance from her and the the gang”

Paul Hickin

“Ok, they really rocked, especially on Nobody’s Fool, topped off a night of great performances all round. Wish they would play Photo as I love that song”

Keeley Hickin

Anita Maj struts onto the stage and spellbinds the audience with her first note.

Tonight she is ably assisted with keyboard wizard Adam Day, as she runs through old favourites like ‘Don’t Forget Me’ to new classics such as ‘Happy Song’.

With lots of onstage banter with the audience, Anita explains her tales of love and loss with the particularly heart-breaking ‘I’ll Never Know’.

The set ends with the hypnotic and bluesy ‘Woman’, with the added twist of bluesy piano licks courtesy of Adam Day.

With the crowd clamouring for more, Anita leaves the stage and we are in no doubt that a star is born.

“The EP opens with ‘Nobody’s Fool’ the raw and seductive melody takes the listener on Anita’s journey through frustration and love and not being taken advantage of, the players are clearly feeling it too as the addictive guitar hook takes you over.

One of my faves is ‘Out of Control’ is one of those songs you definitely want to hear ‘live’ and one of the more commercial tracks.

If you want to check Anita and the Blues look no further than ‘Woman’, is it pure escapism or is Anita just toying with the listener? Love this one, check the lyrics you decide…….

Anita continues the running the lyrical thread with ‘Don’t Forget Me’, another gem that works acoustically (they played it on my show) as well as full blown recording, when you hear this you’ll murder to hear this at one of her many shows.

‘Cigar’ is short, punky and visceral ditty of a number, I can imagine the band really letting off on this one, you can imagine Anita probably saying ‘guys just go for it…’ sweat dripping everywhere, but who cares!.

In contrast we have the beautiful ‘I’ll Never Know’, the opening piano is a surprise, because of that you give the track time to seep into you, the string arrangements are quite breathe taking, best to close your eyes for this to really appreciate the musicianship on here, once again Anita showing she really has an appreciation for melody.

In my opinion ‘Don’t Believe in Me’,the next track, sounds like a homage to Kurt Cobain, another one of my faves, one can only describe this number as ‘cool’.

Anita seems at home in the studio, pouring out her heart and soul on every composition, make no mistake, once you get a taste of Anita Maj you’ll want more and more and more…”
